Full disclosure… I never thought I was going to get married.
I never made a Pinterest board with all of my wedding dreams, I never gushed to my friends about what my future husband would look like, and I never dreamt about the house that we would build a life together in one day. My best girlfriend once told me, “Your first very serious boyfriend will become your husband, I just know it.” Well, disclaimer: she was not wrong!
Justin proposed to me while we were in Mexico on vacation. He was getting ready to go for dinner while I was waiting in the other room. Justin asked me to grab his wallet from the safe. I thought to myself that he was definitely way closer to the safe, but since we’re on vacation, I will be kind and go get it. I opened the safe, all the while shouting, “NO!” I glanced back to see my now-husband smiling, and he asked me to marry him.
We enjoyed tequila on the beach swings and talked all about what our wedding would look like. Before this, we had never really had this conversation… like I said, I really had no idea he was going to propose. Later that year, we decided on hosting our wedding at The Burroughes, a loft venue at Queen & Bathurst. If you have never visited The Burroughes before, it’s quite a special place. We knew the venue was a perfect way to wow our guests. The patio has an amazing view of the city, making it reason enough to book it for a summer event or wedding.
We wanted our wedding to be a special day not only for us, but for our friends and family too. After we chose our venue, we dove headfirst into planning the finer details. My first phone call was to my absolute favourite florist, Tellie at Hunt & Gather Floral. I adore her unstructured designs and the attention she pays to each hand-placed stem in her arrangements. I let her know the colours and feelings I wanted the florals to evoke, and Tellie made my dreams come to life. When Tellie handed over my bouquet, I think that might have been the highlight of my wedding (shhh… don’t tell my husband).
The only major request from my husband was that we have a live band at our wedding. After going on a serious Google search marathon one evening, we found Southbound Soul. The band ended up playing live music before and during our ceremony, and it was one of the best decisions we made. If you love live music, incorporating it into your wedding day is an absolute must! Our guests loved the energy the band brought and it was so special to have our songs performed live.
Next, we found our dream officiant! Mark from Unboring Wedding is truly one of a kind. He delivers non-denominational ceremonies with love and laughter. Mark expresses your story, your real love story and makes it so very special. Our guests absolutely loved how Mark made our ceremony so engaging and unique. The best part is that Mark has a podcast and now our ceremony is in digital form, so we can listen anytime.
After our ceremony, we had popsicles from The Pop Stand. Kari is an absolute gem and she had her adorable polka dot cooler on wheels with an umbrella. She also brought a blackboard with a curated list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic popsicles. This was the perfect treat for our guests on a warm summer day as they headed up to the rooftop for passed appetizers and cocktails.
After our delicious dinner catered by The Food Dudes, we had The Latte Booth setup near the dance floor. The Latte Booth has delicious coffees of all varieties. You can even step up the game and personalize the coffee cups. Our guests loved the little extra coffee treat.
Southbound Soul played the rest of the evening as my husband and guests danced the night away. We even snuck up to the patio for some moments just the two of us. Lastly, our photographer, TJ Tindale, captured every special moment. TJ truly became one of our friends and we were so happy with his easygoing approach to photography. We felt so comfortable and now have the amazing moments of our special day captured forever.
For the girl that never thought she would get married and that she would just plan other clients’ weddings - the day was more than I could have ever imagined. There are so many incredible vendors in Toronto. I do suggest you reach out to ones you would like to work with, go visit their studio or find them at a wedding show and chat with them. Online reviews are great but find a connection with your vendors and I promise that will make your day that much more special.
