Wedding cakes are getting smaller and smaller and sometimes don’t even make an appearance at weddings anymore. By the time you combine a multiple coursed meal with the wine, it’s tricky for your guests to even think about cake. So, who are you getting the cake for? You and your partner of course! I like to think of it as a personal cake; for you to enjoy that evening, the next morning, and to freeze for a special occasions.
With so many delicious bakeries in Toronto, it can be a challenge narrowing down dessert choices. Not to worry, we went out of our way to go and taste some cakes. We took our job very seriously to track down our favourite cakes.
Patricia’s Cake Creations
There is something particularly special about Patricia’s Cake Creations. Even when you pick up cupcakes for a small event, the experience is worth it. They let you know the proper care instructions to make sure you serve their dessert when the buttercream is at its best. This bakery uses only the best ingredients for each tasty treat. They also make flower designs on the top of their cupcakes. Not to mention, their buttercream is to die for! From cupcakes to custom cakes, each one is made with care. They create cakes for any occasion and their cupcakes frequent any event I have. Patricia’s even made the cake for Princess Meghan Markle when she got married on Suits. So, if you’re looking for a cake fit for a princess, this is definitely the spot.
Phipp’s has been around for years, servicing the North part of the city. They have established themselves as a go-to spot for all baked goods. Their challah bread… I mean say no more! They have unique cake choices, including my personal favourite Bananarama with cream cheese icing! Each cake is thoughtfully decorated or you can customize your own cake. Their wedding cakes usually consist of vanilla or a chocolate/vanilla mix.
Crumb & Berry
I first came across Crumb & Berry when I was at the Wedding Co. show. I was immediately drawn towards their colourful and gorgeous cake designs. I have since followed along on their Instagram, as their custom options really seem as though anything is possible. I love how they also believe in using the best ingredients to deliver a one-of-a-kind cake. You can taste the difference when a cake is made with extra love and farm fresh eggs. If you’re looking for a cake that reflects your personality and wedding vision, I know Crumb & Berry will be a great option.
If you have a friend or family member that makes delicious baked goods, you could ask them to create your cake. If you find yourself over budget in your wedding planning, this is a quick and easy way to cut costs. If you know that your catering company has the desserts covered and the cake is more just for show, then you could employ a baking friend to create a cake. Have them ice it white and then you can ask your florist for some extra flowers/foliage to decorate the cake with. Or visit Etsy for some amazing cake toppers.
